UKNAR – UK National Asbestos Register Launches New Public Sector Campaign

UKNAR, the UK National Asbestos Register is building momentum with a new campaign ‘Sharing Information to Save Lives’, aimed primarily at dutyholders of public sector buildings and premises.

As a new social enterprise and Community Interest Company (CIC), the campaign is UKNAR’s robust commitment, to better inform and educate those at risk of asbestos exposure, thereby helping to prevent thousands of unnecessary deaths from asbestos related cancers.

The UK National Asbestos Register uses Asbestos SMART technology to provide contractors, visitors and staff with 24/7 access to the asbestos register for a site. By scanning a unique site specific QR code, (via a Smartphone or tablet) users can download the asbestos register, giving them instant visibility of the location of any already identified asbestos in the premises they are visiting.

Andrew Paten, UKNAR Co-Founder and Chair of Metro Safety comments:

“We are calling on conscientious dutyholders to join the UK National Asbestos Register and use  Asbestos SMART to make the key information contained in their asbestos registers instantly and freely available to everyone that needs it on their sites.

Andy Brown, UKNAR Co-founder, added: “We are very serious about tackling asbestos and the enormous public health issue it continues to present. By December 2024, our goal is for at least 80% of all public sector buildings which contain asbestos to be on the UK National Asbestos Register.”

As well as helping to reduce the UK’s high number of accidental and potentially fatal asbestos exposures, UKNAR supports dutyholders by helping them to comply (and be seen to comply) with their legal obligation to share asbestos information with those who may be affected by its presence.

Public Sector dutyholders pay UKNAR a small annual license fee per site asbestos register for this service. A proportion of the annual licence fees will go to help asbestos victims support organisations and research charities in their daily activities.
