UKNAR – UK National Asbestos Register Receives CIC Status
We are delighted to announce that in February 2020 UKNAR, the UK National Asbestos Register received regulatory approval to become a Community Interest Company (CIC). UKNAR is a new social enterprise which helps dutyholders manage asbestos simply and safely, while better informing and educating those at risk. UKNAR aims to protect the health of the general public, by limiting future avoidable asbestos exposures and preventing thousands of unnecessary deaths from asbestos related cancers.
As a regulated Community Interest Company UKNAR must exist primarily to benefit a community, or with a view to pursuing a social purpose, rather than to make a profit for shareholders. Profits will be reinvested to continue to improve education and asbestos awareness. UKNAR hopes to partner with other key established organisations to achieve this goal.
To drive this mission, UKNAR’s Asbestos SMART system has been launched to allow 24/7 access to the UK National Asbestos Register, via a Smartphone or tablet, by simply scanning a unique site-specific QR code. The technology is aimed at visiting contractors and on-site personnel who may be at risk of coming into contact with or disturbing asbestos. The user has instant visibility of the location of any already identified asbestos at site.
Andrew Paten, UKNAR Co-Founder and Chair of Metro Safety comments: “Our primary aim is to make information visible, in order to save lives, by protecting people from unnecessary and potentially deadly exposure to asbestos fibres. Two million UK workplaces, schools, hospitals and homes still contain asbestos. Despite improved legislation, there continues to be thousands of accidental disturbances and exposures to asbestos every year. By joining the UK National Asbestos Register, we hope that one day no one will put themselves and others unnecessarily at risk.”
Andy Brown, UKNAR, Co-Founder added: “We are very serious about tackling asbestos and the enormous public health issue it continues to present. By December 2024, our goal is for at least 80% of all public sector buildings which contain asbestos to be on the UK National Asbestos Register.”
Dutyholders pay a small annual license fee, per site asbestos register. A proportion of the annual licence fees will go to help asbestos victims support organisations and research charities in their daily activities.
